Normally this section is dedicated to a technology article to keep you informed of what is happening in the tech world. This month we decided to focus on something which has impacted business (and life in general) in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor in ways people outside of this area may not understand.
At RTS we finally have damage repaired and only have two stumps left as reminders of the trees we lost. They will come out when our "tree guy" finally catches up since they aren't hurting anything in the meantime.
We are still "hosting" some machines for clients who have not completely recovered and are happy we can do so. We are grateful with where we are compared to some others in our area.
Did you tense up a little when the storm started this year on 8/10? I sure did! (Penny speaking) As did our company dog, Duke. He was home alone on 8/10/2020 and since it was 7:30 PM before we could get there, he was quite upset. He now hides whenever he hears the wind blow or a siren.
According to the Cedar Rapids city page more than 65% of the city's tree canopy was damaged and/or destroyed - up to 100,000 trees. $7.5 billion worth of damage from the storm's entire path (South Dakota to Ohio) makes it the most costly thunderstorm in US history.
While the destruction was devastating, our recovery efforts are what we can all be proud of. We worked together. We struggled together. We helped each other out in whatever ways we could. It's why we are a beautiful community, even if we are missing over half of our trees.
