Blue backpack with business checklist and office supplies on desk

Use September to address technology, operational, and planning gaps before the year end rush.

There is something impressive about how well families prepare for the back-to-school season. Backpacks are ready, schedules are adjusted, and everyone knows where they need to be. Amid everything else happening at the end of summer, families find a way to prepare before the first day arrives.

Businesses can take a similar approach to Q4. The organizations that finish the year strong are often the ones that use September to prepare before calendars fill up and priorities become more urgent. Taking time now to review a few important areas can help your team enter the final quarter with greater clarity and fewer surprises.

Review Your Q4 Priorities

If you asked three people on your leadership team to name the company's most important priority before the end of the year, would you get the same answer? Business leaders often assume everyone is aligned without taking time to verify it.

September is a good time to make sure everyone understands what needs to happen before the year ends. Consider which revenue targets, projects, or customer commitments cannot slip, and whether everyone understands what matters most right now. The businesses that finish strong are usually the ones that have these conversations before everything starts feeling urgent.

Check Your Technology Budget

Technology expenses have a way of becoming more difficult to manage when they are unexpected. Before budgets are locked and schedules tighten, take time to understand what may be coming in Q4.

Review upcoming warranties, licenses, and software renewals, along with aging hardware that may create reliability concerns. This is also a good time to revisit security, backup, and compliance needs that have been pushed aside. The goal is to identify costs and risks while there is still time to plan for them instead of dealing with an urgent problem in November.

Make Sure Your Team Is Ready

Summer can quietly change how a team operates. Employees take time off, new people join the organization, and responsibilities sometimes shift without much discussion. By September, a team may look the same on paper while operating differently in practice.

Before Q4 begins, make sure everyone understands where things stand. New or returning employees should understand their current responsibilities, role changes or gaps should be addressed, and employees should know what to do if an unexpected disruption occurs. When the final months of the year arrive and everyone is focused on getting work done, unclear responsibilities become much harder to address.

Clean Up The Little Things You've Been Ignoring

Every business has a list of things that never quite reach the top of the priority pile. Old user accounts may still be active, documentation may be outdated or missing, and messy processes needing attention continue getting pushed to another day.

These issues may be easy to live with during a slower period, but they can become bottlenecks and security risks when business picks up. September gives you an opportunity to address what has been sitting too long while there is still room to deal with it thoughtfully.

Ask One Preparedness Question

September is National Preparedness Month. While most people associate preparedness with storms, power outages, or other emergencies at home, the same thinking applies to your business.

Ask your leadership team a simple question: If an unexpected disruption were to affect the business tomorrow, would everyone know what to do? If the answer is a confident yes, you are in a good position. If the question creates uncertainty, now is the time to have the conversation. Clear communication before a disruption is far less costly than confusion during one.

Schedule A Quarterly Strategy Meeting With Your Technology Partner

A good technology partner understands more than your open support tickets. September is a good time to step away from day-to-day issues and have a broader conversation about where the business is headed and what technology is needed to support along the way.

Use the conversation to discuss:

  • Where your business is headed in Q4 and what technology needs to support it
  • Operational risks or gaps that have not been formally addressed
  • Hardware, software, or security decisions that should be made before year end
  • Whether your recovery plan is current and your team knows how to use it

Businesses get more value from their technology partner when the relationship goes beyond responding to problems. Regular conversations about priorities, risks, and upcoming decisions help connect technology planning to what the business is trying to accomplish.

Get Ready Before The Q4 Rush

The families that have a smoother start to the school year are usually the ones that handle important details before the first day arrives. Businesses have a similar opportunity in September. Taking time now to review priorities, budgets, responsibilities, outstanding issues, and preparedness can make the final months of the year easier to manage.

At RTS, we help businesses throughout the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor connect technology decisions to business priorities through proactive planning, responsive support, and clear communication. The goal is not to add another technology project to your list. It is to help your business enter Q4 with greater clarity about what needs attention and what can be planned for next.

If a few items on this list have been sitting longer than you would like, let's have a conversation.
